Boating Laws in Rhode Island

To keep the waters safe for everyone, Rhode Island requires certain boaters to complete a safety course and carry a boating license.

Who Needs a License?
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1986 must complete an approved boating safety course to operate a motorized vessel over 10 horsepower. All personal watercraft (PWC) operators, regardless of age, must complete the course.

How to Get Certified:
Take a Rhode Island-Approved Course. Courses are available online and in person through the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM).

Pass the In-Person Exam
After finishing the course, you'll need to pass a free in-person exam. Once you pass, you’ll receive your Rhode Island Boating Safety Certificate.

Keep It On Board
You must carry your license while operating any qualifying vessel. Store it in a waterproof case for easy access.
