Newport is an affluent town on an island in Rhode Island made famous for its ultra-elite mansions and wealthy residents such as the Vanderbilts. Located 35 miles southeast of Providence and 70 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts, residents have quick access to big city amenities.

Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina is on the northernmost point of Goat Island, with spectacular views of Newport Harbor and the Channel. Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant has a charming, bright yellow exterior on Thames Street that makes you want to dine here. Order classic American dishes in a fun atmosphere steps from the marina. Eat refined seafood with sweeping views of Newport Harbor at The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar on the pier.
Locals along the quaint and walkable Thames Street can find many boutique-style shops and cafes that make for a great day of leisurely shopping. Shoppers can also find plenty of upscale stores at the Long Wharf Mall between the marina and Thames Street.

Things to Do

Newport has many activities, but boating is a way of life in the community, whether sailing, yachting, or fishing. Fort Adams State Park is an excellent place for history and recreation located at the mouth of Newport Harbor. It is home to festivals, boating, fishing, picnicking, soccer, and swimming. Visitors can explore Fort Adams to learn about its history as a fort, either with a guide or self-guided.
The most regal mansion in town is The Breakers Mansion, previously home to the uber-wealthy Vanderbilt family. You can take a tour to view the beauty and architecture and to see how one of the richest families in America lived. Before or after your tour, grab a bite to eat at the Garden Café.
In the summer months, residents can enjoy lounging on one of many beaches on the island, with Easton’s Beach, Gooseberry Beach, and Bailey’s Beach top picks. Are you interested in going for a walk with breathtaking views? Take a stroll on the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, where spectacular ocean views will greet you. Golfers can enjoy playing at the member-only Newport Country Club, a historic golf course that goes back to the late 1800s.
